Random Thoughts: Covering up

On today’s Random Thoughts, we’ll discuss the subject of cover songs. I personally love most cover songs, as they generally offer a fresh new taste on a song, sometimes in a genre that is completely different in sound and style from the original. Now, some people I’ve talked to really don’t like the idea of covers, as they feel that the cover is essentially theft of the song from the original artist. That’s a completely different discussion onto itself, but I generally am in support of a cover if it is distinct enough from the original. Exhibit A:

The song looked at here is Just the Way You Are, sung by Bruno Mars and covered by Pierce the Veil. I actually heard the Pierce the Veil version first, which convinced me to go find the original. As you can pretty easily tell in the first minute or so of each song, they have similar themes musically, but Just the Way You Are sounds very different as a punk song than in more of an R&B style. Again, they do need to be quite different in order to be really good covers in my mind.

Random Thought: Getting my head back in the game.

((If you haven’t seen Avengers: Rise of Ultron, go watch it. No joke. Totally worth only having 2 hours of sleep between Thursday and Friday for.))

Hi all,

It’s been a while since I posted anything. I had a one-week rebirth earlier this month, but then I died again. I’ve been realizing something recently, though – I miss doing some of my posts, but I don’t miss the others. Sorry to those that joined due to my creative writing, but I realize that that was one of the major stresses that I had while trying to keep this blog going. As much as I personally love the adventures of Syrus, James, and the rest of the ARC gang, I just don’t have the focus to write cohesive stories at the moment involving them. Maybe for NaNo this year? And Dokapon…there was originally something completely different planned with that, but then I lost all the audio from the playthrough. Writing a screenshot LP that is interesting with Dokapon is a bit harder than I thought…

However, I do realize that I want to get back into the full swing of things, because it is just fun to do! With a new month, I’m going to give it another shake, and see what sticks. I’ll be doing a mixture of things this time around, though, to try and make it less stressful for me. Here’s a rough outline of what my new schedule will be (tentative, of course!):

Random Thoughts – Backlog

As I sit here (realizing that I completely forgot to update my short story not once, but twice!) My mind wanders to my stack of games over by my TV. I’m reminded of a post on IGN a while back, about resolving to beat less games this year. The reasoning made sense – instead of forcing yourself to play any game you start to completion, why not just stop playing games that you don’t enjoy? I definitely have a short list of games to beat this year:

Persona Q and Persona 5(when it comes out), because Persona.

Dark Souls 2, because I loved Dark Souls 1 once I got myself to actually sit down and play it. Sorcery classes make it so much fun!

Earth Defense Force 2025 (as much as one can beat that game, at least)

Kirby’s Epic Yarn, because I need my Kirby fix until I can get a copy of Return to Dream Land or the collection.

Strider – I was having problems with it at the start, but I think it’ll be fine once I use a half-decent controller

And finally, XCOM: Enemy Within. Loved Enemy Unknown, would love to see how the new enemies and factions come into play in the expansion!

I’m also giving up on a few games this year as well. Despite my best efforts, I don’t think that I’m going to finish Shin Megami Tensei IV, it just wasn’t resonating with me as much as I had hoped. Also done trying to beat DmC, it just wasn’t resonating with me as a game, to be honest – we’ll see if my opinion changes after beating Bayonetta. Finally (and I feel like I might get some flak for this) I think I’m done trying to beat The Last of Us: Left Behind. I’ll watch an LP of it, but the DLC was just stressing me out too much and I wasn’t really feeling the plot as much as it resonated with other people.

Any games that you’re hoping to play all the way through this year? Any games that you’re giving up on?

Random Thoughts: Pick your Poison…

Here’s a new post type for you! Random Thoughts – collecting whatever is randomly in my head at the moment. It fits with the original theme of this blog, where I was supposed to be posting whatever floated to the surface of my mind as I went through my day.

This was an old thought of mine from way back when – back when people were strongly freaking out about Ebola in the US. Before you go to the comments and call me a heartless, insensitive jerk, I have this to say: you’re right on two out of those three! But all I could think of when skimming these posts (and no one seemed to post anything on social media not related to Ebola) was E. Honda. Yes, that E. Honda. With that, I made a random picture based on my frame of thought:
